I was tagged to post 7 interesting things about myself, but since I'm not sure they qualify as "interesting," I'll leave it at "random."
1. I never thought I would "live" in Utah. I was born and raised in Alexandria, Louisiana... and although Tyler's family thinks of me as "the yellow rose of Texas," I only lived there for a couple of years before we met. When we were in college, there was a commercial on T.V. about "livin' in Utah." Tyler would tease me and I would say, "I don't live here, I'm just visiting." I've been here now for about 16 years, but although there are some things I enjoy about this crazy state, it will never be "home."
2. I started having panic attacks when I was in 5th grade, but wasn't able to stop them until I was about 31 years old. The way I learned to stop them is through running and learning how to get to that "smooth" place. This has enabled me to run 2 marathons (and I will run a 3rd after I wean "Tucker"... yep, that's his name). I later found out that those techniques are also often called "hypnotherapy" and you can use them for other things like a pain-free childbirth, meditation, and a myriad of others. It's the best skill I know how to do!
3. I regret that I never learned to play the piano. Mama always told me I would when she let me quit, but I didn't believe her. I went on to learn a little violin, guitar, voice... you name it, but I never got good at anything. I'm working a bit now with my girls since there is often no one to play in our ward for things like Primary and Relief Society, but it's slow going!
4. One of the hardest things for me to do is work with money. I HATE making a budget (that puts me into a state closer to panic than anything else), filling out payroll reports, accounting sheets... anything to do with money is difficult for me. In the past year, I have worked on this a LOT and I'm doing much better (thank you, Dave Ramsey), but it is still a struggle.
5. I grew up without a T.V. We had one until I was about three, I think, but Mama was worried about the effect it was having on the boys. After praying about it, lightning struck the antenna and burned up the T.V. (how's that for an answer) and we didn't get another one until I was in high school. As a result, I think, I still read several books a week. I don't retain much, though, because I read them so quickly. In fact, sometimes I will get half-way through a book before I realize I've read it before. The only reason I am willing to admit this is because several other of my "reading buddies" have the same problem =)
6. I can remember the location of random objects. In fact, for "New Beginnings", when I went into Young Women, Mama listed "knows where it's at" as my talent. I always thought it was funny that she would consider this my best talent, but I guess when you are the mother of seven, it is a necessity. In fact, even after I left for college, she would call with questions like, "Do you remember where I put that book....etc." It's weird, I don't even remember that I have seen objects, but if I close my eyes and think... I know where they are. This has been put to use many times with the absentminded in my family, although I'm not as good at it as I once was. Savannah seems to have some of the "gift" as well.
7. And last, but not least... I am a neat freak. I now, you're all shocked by that one. I am constantly telling myself not to clean certain things (particularly in my current condition)... because I could literally spend all of my time cleaning up (especially with 4 other particularly messy people). It's not that I love cleaning, I just love the way things look when they are clean. The rest of my family thinks this is a real pain when we go on a trip because the whole house must be clean before we leave, and everything (including the car) has to be cleaned-up when we get back home. I think this also might be why my kids almost never get sick. In fact, about the only time the kids ever see the doctor is for their annual flu shots. Maybe I'm just trying to rationalize it. My two "best friends" of cleaning are Odo-Ban (if you've never used it... make a trip to Sam's Club, today) and my "Roomba" (who knew I spent so much time vacuuming... yes, I do it every day). The only "homemaking skills" I don't like are ironing and patching torn clothes.
