On Wednesday night, our family embarked on one of our favorite holiday traditions. We take the kids to the Dollar Store to choose toys for each other and presents for Tyler and I. They absolutely love it, and talk about it for weeks in advance (i.e. discussing who will shop with which parent). The best part is seeing what they choose for us. I've received various shades and types of make-up (a subtle hint?), and several household decorations (that we pack in the decorations box and look at and admire each year =) Last year, after we got home, Oliver ran up to Tyler, gave him a big hug and said, "You're going to love what I buyed for you. I got you olives." This year he tried to tell him again, but Emmaline managed to stop him.
When we were at the store, Oliver really wanted to buy a toy for himself, and give it to Tyler. I thought we had come to an agreement about an alternate gift, but as we got ready to wrap gifts, he searched the bags and cried when he realized it wasn't there. After several minutes of telling me, "He really would love that present, Mama," we've decided we'll have to go back and get that extra toy. I guess I'm just too soft, or maybe I can't wait to see how this all plays out. If I know Tyler, he's not just going to give it back- he'll pretend he loves it and insist that it is his gift. What a pair they are!

Charlotte, I love that idea! I usually end up buying all the gifts to/from everyone, and I just feel like my kids don't get to be a part of it. Maybe we'll try that next year!
We had fun today...hope everyone else did to!
My family had a similar tradition, except we had to make our presents and it had it be under $10. It' was always alot of fun, and I got some my favorite presents that way.
We do that too! Its always an adventure trying to pick something out with all of the kids. And wouldn't you know, last year they were way more excited about the dollar store gifts they got than anything else!
